Congratulations to Chris Sarracino for being nominated for the IUP Young Alumni Achievement Award! This award was created to recognize recent IUP graduates who demonstrate excellence in their fields and to engage award recipients with current IUP students as examples of exceptional achievement.
All recent graduates of IUP (less than 15 years) who have recorded notable accomplishments in their chosen profession are eligible for this award. Each year, one outstanding alumnus/a from each college of IUP is chosen by their Dean to receive this award. The Young Alumni Achievers are invited to campus to hold seminars, presentations, and panel discussions on topics related to their professions. Those who have graduated from IUP within the past fifteen years who have recorded notable accomplishments in their chosen professions are eligible. Each year, one outstanding alumnus or alumna from each college is chosen to receive the award.
Final selections are made by the Deans. Winners of the Young Alumni Achievement Award teach current students about their professions by making presentations and holding panel discussions in the classrooms. (Award description is from the IUP website)

The Executive Committee of the Western PA Chapter of ASSP is excited to announce the Chapter has a new Student Section at Thiel College in Greenville PA. This is the third Student Section for the Chapter. The Student Advisor is Melissa A. Heike, M.S., CSP, Assistant Professor, Environmental Safety Management. The Student Officers are listed on the Chapter Webpage along with Slippery Rock University and Indiana University of PA. More information to follow in the coming months.
The first Technical Meeting of 2022 was conducted as a live virtual lunch meeting on January 13, 2022. The Presenter was Joe Kopko, MS, CSP, CRIS, the Chief Risk Officer for Seubert & Associates, Inc. Joe spoke to how Safety Professionals can institute and manage change in a safety culture.
There were nineteen (19) people that participated though we had 26 that registered. Thank you to those who participated in this virtual meeting!
The Western PA Chapter of ASSP offers a scholarship program for students who have shown a career interest in a safety or safety-related degree program. The Chapter also offers a grant program for members who are looking to pursue a professional certification (Examples: CSP, CIH, CHST, etc.) or who are seeking funding to attend a professional development event such as regional or national safety conference or continuing education. The application period is January 01 – March 01 each year with selection no later than April 01.
