The Chapter NEEDS new Officers and members of the Executive Committee!

The election of Chapter Officers will be in April of 2022 for the 2022-2024 Chapter years which begins July 1, 2022. All Chapter Officer positions will be for 2-year terms.

If you are interested in nominating yourself or someone else for an office, submit your name or their name and the position of interest to the Nominations and Elections Committee, see email address below.

Western PA ASSP Student Scholarship and Professional Grant Program

The Western PA Chapter of ASSP offers a scholarship program for students who have shown a career interest in a safety or safety-related degree program. The Chapter also offers a grant program for members who are looking to pursue a professional certification (Examples: CSP, CIH, CHST, etc.) or who are seeking funding to attend a professional development event such as regional or national safety conference or continuing education. The application period is January 01 – March 01 each year with selection no later than April 01.

December Holiday Lunch and Networking Summary

The December Holiday Lunch and Networking event was conducted as an in-person event on December 17, 2021, at Hofbrauhaus Pittsburgh hosted by the Chapter Executive Committee. We had a buffet lunch and a lot of time to talk with people we haven’t been with for a long while. There was also a drawing for many door prizes provided by many of the Professionals and their employers.

We had a total of thirty-eight (38) people in attendance of which were 10 Students from the Slippery Rock University Student section along with Cindy Medford, their Advisor.

Thank you to those who participated in this in-person event and for to those that provided door prizes for our drawing!

Wanted: EHS Job Shadow Opportunities

WANTED:  EHS Job Shadow Opportunities

WHEN: March 14-18, 2022, Spring Break

FOR: Student Chapter Members

WHO: EHS Professionals who can offer at minimum 1 day (but up to 5 days) to one or more students who are actively pursuing a degree within the EHS profession!

As the professional chapter we are vested in the future of our student chapter members, and local colleges in Western PA (Indiana University of PA and Slippery Rock University). While actively working with the student chapters we have identified that the students want opportunities to understand more about the profession in real life and gain applicable experience.

Each student will be assigned 1 day to a job shadow opportunity. The Job Shadow Provider / EHS Professional may offer more than 1 day of availability, therefore will host multiple students if interested.

The Western PA ASSP will assist in coordinating the opportunities with the college student chapters.

November Technical Meeting Summary and Recording

The November Technical Meeting was conducted as an in-person and live virtual evening meeting on November 11, 2021 at Indiana University of PA (IUP) hosted by the IUP Student Section. There were two Speakers, Dr. Luz S. Marín, Editor in Chief of SHIFT: Global EHS Research to Practice, BCSP Foundation; and Associate Professor in the Department of Safety Sciences at IUP and JA Rodriguez Jr CSP, ASP, Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) at Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP).

There were thirty-five (35) people total that participated. We had eleven (11) Professionals of which eight (8) were in-person attendees and three (3) were virtual participants and there were twenty-four (24) IUP students, all in-person attendees. Thank you to those who participated in this in-person and virtual meeting! Thank you to Dr. Majed Zreiqat and the IUP Student Section for hosting.
